MARK DURNAN said Alloa had 11 leaders on the pitch on Saturday as the club made it two wins in a row.

Durnan, wearing the captain’s armband, assisted Conor Sammon for the second goal but said it’s just good to playing again after a double-blow with Covid-19.

He told Advertiser Sport: “It’s been frustrating at times because I came in feeling fit, got a good pre-season under my belt and then with Covid, my wife got it and then I got it so I had to do 20 days isolating so it was frustrating.

“Since I’ve came back – it was tough at first, I’m still getting fit – but I feel like I’m getting there now and, hopefully, we’ll see more results [like Saturday].

"We’re getting a good team together and, hopefully, we can get a settled squad and keep everybody fit and build some momentum.”

Durnan said he’s enjoying life under Barry Ferguson and the demands he puts on the players.

“That’s what you want," he continued. "You want standards, you want somebody that’s going to put demands on you because it’s going to bring the best out of you and if it doesn’t bring the best out of you you’re not going to be here.

"That’s been made very clear and it’s something we should be thriving on and I want to thrive on it and I’ll be putting demands on the players.

“That’s another thing he wants, he wants us to be putting demands on each other and that’s certainly what we’ll do. If I’m slacking somebody will be having a go at me. It’s setting standards and it’s putting us in good stead just now.

“The manager says it’s a dying breed, boys speaking [on the pitch] and helping each other out but it shouldn’t be, it should be 11 players helping each other out. We need 11 leaders out there and [on Saturday] we certainly had that, the boys in front of [the defence] were brilliant picking up the second balls and that was key for us.”

Durnan’s header to the back-post gave Sammon an easy finish and he knows Alloa need to be at their best to get out of this league.

“To be honest I want more goals,” he continued. “To be honest I’ve just found myself in that position and I knew being on the back foot I probably wouldn’t have been able to score so I just made sure I put it in the right area and thankfully Sammo was there in the right position to put it away.

“I’ve been in this league, I was in it the last two years with Falkirk and I certainly know there’s no easy games, it doesn’t matter if you’re playing Dumbarton [or] Cove or you’re playing Falkirk or Airdrie who are full-time teams, you need to be at it and by winning games and keeping clean sheets – hopefully, we’ll do that.”
