THE future of a successful farmers’ market has been secured for another three years.

Haddington Farmers’ Market has proven a popular addition to the social calendar since it started in April 2000.

Volunteers behind the monthly market had applied to East Lothian Council to see the market remain in place for another three years; ensuring it will take place until 2024 at least.

The local authority approved the plans earlier this month.

The market, which takes place on the last Saturday of each month, regularly attracts more than a dozen stallholders and hundreds of customers to Court Street between 9am and 1pm.

The planning officer’s report reads: “The existing market has successfully operated over the past 21 years without public complaint to the planning authority and without any identified road traffic problems.

“It is concluded that the continuing operation of the market for a further period of three years would not have an adverse impact on the amenity of the area.”
