IT IS HOPED a gym set to open in Alloa will boost the vitality and viability of the town centre by generating footfall.

Plans for the gymnasium, which will occupy part of the former Lidl supermarket at Candleriggs, were submitted by Rubicon Land Ltd and have since been approved with conditions by Clackmannanshire Council.

The proposals will see the vacant shop unit, neighbouring Screwfix which occupies one part of the former supermarket, revitalised with some alterations to be undertaken.

A report by the council's planning service on the decision to approve the development said: “The development would introduce a use which would increase the vitality and viability of the town centre by generating regular and frequent footfall and activity which is likely to be from morning till evening.

“The use would also help diversify the mix of commercial uses within the town centre.

“The unit is vacant and has been for over two years.

“The proposed glazed entrance would enhance the appearance of this part of the building and reflect its character.

“The site is easily accessible by public transport and active travel modes.”

One condition for the development to go ahead will require owners to submit a noise assessment as activities have the potential to affect the residential amenity of neighbours with flats located to the north and west of the site.

Cycle racks will also have to be installed before the gym opens, unless otherwise agreed by the council.

There were no objections to the proposals and council planning documents said there is no other similar facility currently available in the town centre.
