A COMMUNITY group aiming to improve the mental health and wellbeing of ethnic minorities in Clacks has started a block of activities and workshops.

Al Masaar, a group which has worked with ethnic minorities in Falkirk for the past seven years, has expanded its services across Forth Valley and is looking to reach out to people in the Wee County.

One Zoom session has already taken place with another scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, January 27.

The first meeting in person will take place at the Mayfield Centre in Stirling on Thursday, February 3.

Sofia Akbar, co founder and CEO of the group, says the main aim of the group is to improve people through social capital and upskilling to empower themselves for the future.

She said: “It’s based on what we do in Falkirk. There’s a barrier of language and cultural understanding and that needs to be addressed.”

In Falkirk, the group had activities such as craft sessions; however, they are keen to include hillwalking in the Wee County to make the most of the area.

Sofia continued: “It’s not very common in our communities for ladies to go out hillwalking. We also have a member of staff from the NHS who will come to talk about healthy eating.”

The group will also be extending its work with Falkirk's Mental Health Association (FDAMH) to provide support.

Sofia added: “We’ve been working in Falkirk for seven years now and we want to use our experience to help families in Clacks and Stirling.

“We are not faith based, despite the name. Our framework is based on race equality and anti racism.

“You’ll get a positive social network, opportunities to upskill and learn new things.”

The 14-week programme will also include workshops in confidence building, Zumba, yoga and more.

Free lunches are available as is childcare and there is also limited transport for those struggling to travel.

“We’re all about educating and learning new things,” said Sofia, who has a background in teaching. “We always have enriched learning experiences.

“It’s all about learning, whether that it’s the parents or the children. It’s all about improving yourself to empower yourself for the future."
