AN MSP is "deeply frustrated" over bus price increases which came into force for Wee County commuters this week.

Existing fares increased by an average of 5.7 per cent on First Bus services with the start of May, prompting frustrations from Greens MSP Mark Ruskell.

The Mid Scotland and Fife representative has criticised the increase, but the company said new options will help many customers save money.

While existing fares have increased, the company said a new range of bundle ticketing options will offer customers greater flexibility.

Mr Ruskell said: "I'm deeply frustrated that First Bus have chosen to increase their fares across Clackmannanshire and the rest of Scotland.

"We are facing one of the most acute cost of living crises of our generation.

"Now more than ever, it cannot be right for private bus companies to keep shunting costs onto passengers, particularly at a time where services are still not up to scratch in the region.

"With the gradual easing of Covid restrictions and the introduction of free bus travel for all Under 22s, passenger numbers are going to be increasing.

"Despite this increase of money in First's fare box, we're still seeing last minute cancellations of services and complete closure of lifeline routes, like the X53."

As reported in March, scores of bus services were being cancelled around Clacks as transport bosses struggle with driver shortages.

"And now passengers are landed with skyrocketing fares", Mr Ruskell continued. "It's just not good enough."

First Bus explained better value options for mobile tickets have been introduced with "3-in-7, 10-in-28 and 15-in-28" bundles across zones.

Duncan Cameron, managing director of First Bus Scotland, said: "These changes are essential to allow us to continue to deliver services across Falkirk and Stirlingshire for our customers.

"We have worked hard to keep any fare increases to a minimum – ensuring that no increase surpasses Consumer Price Inflation – and continue to offer customers the cheapest fares via the First Bus App.

"There's never been a better time to make bus travel part of your everyday routine and we are confident that with these changes, we'll see people in the local area choose bus over car as their preferred mode of travel, benefitting both the environment and their pockets."

Mr Ruskell said he would be meeting with First Bus executives in the near future and urged constituents to reach out to his office when their experiences.
