CLACKS footballers and coaches will get the opportunity to learn from some of the best youth coaches in Europe.

Two youth coaches from the world-renowned academy of SL Benfica will be coming to Alloa Saints to lead a session for more than 70 players from various age groups throughout the club.

The four sessions at the Arns cricket ground, home of Clackmannan County Cricket Club, are part of a Scotland wide tour by Coerver Scotland in their link up with SL Benfica.

Sessions are being fully funded by the club.

Paul Robertson, club chairman, said: “We were contacted by Joe Jones and Gordon Craig from Coerver to see if we could run a coaching clinic for the squads which we all greed would be a brilliant idea.

“Unfortunately with the cost of living crisis hitting so many families in the Wee County we wanted to do something whilst continuing with the clubs aim of minimising the costs.

“We set out a plan to fund the event centrally via some fund raising. We have looked at other possibilities but one thing we have done is a special £10 a shot football card consisting of every professional team in the Scottish and English football leagues with the winner getting £600 and the rest goes towards partly funding this event.

“Unfortunately many of our players are on holiday or unable to attend but those that do make it will benefit from some top class coaching and an experience they will never forget.

“The event will also see our coaches benefit to with the Benfica coaches passing on tips to them as part of the coaching session.”

As well as planning for the visit of Coerver, the club are also looking at the start of the new season, not to mention an incredibly busy couple of weekends in August.

The annual Alan McGillivray Memorial Football Festival, which will see 166 teams or 1900 players plus coaches and parents coming to the Wee County, is set to be an incredible beginning to August.

The schedule begins on Saturday, August 6, with the festival for the 2010 age group.

The following day will see the same event for the 2008 age group before a two day event at Lornshill Academy on the weekend of August 13.

Any local businesses which would like to sponsor the event can contact for more information.
