PRIVATE kerbside glass collections will continue in the Wee County after a Clacks company ceased business.

Company Doorstep Glass Recycling (DRG) has been looking to ensure continuity of service, both private and for those eligible under a council scheme, after The Bottle Genies stopped operating their recycling service.

A community-focused business, DRG said it was committed to honouring the pricing customers of The Bottle Genies had in place while also supporting a Clacks foodbank, as they do in Dundee and Angus.

After the first week of collections, the company sent its team to The Gate Foodbank with 40kg of donations.

Danny McAtear, of Doorstep Glass Recycling, said: "It was sad to see another business struggling, but we were in a position to support the customers, support the community and their recycling efforts and thanks to those customers give back to the foodbank to those in our communities who need help most during these difficult times."

The decision to stop operating The Bottle Genies was not an easy one, owners wrote in a newsletter earlier in August.

Tillicoultry couple Scott Andrew and wife Anne saw an opportunity to step in in 2019 after council blue boxes were axed.

In the newsletter, Scott thanked customers for allowing them to assist with glass bottles and jars, which added up to more than 1,200 tonnes over the years.

He said: "The decision to close was not an easy one but I have found running a business very hard on my mental health and felt the safest and best decision was to stop and be a happier father and husband.

"My biggest concern was that I would be letting valued customers down so I subsequently contacted a company called Doorstep Recycling who have agreed to take on any Bottle Genie customer on the same terms as we had agreed."

Scott added: "Thank you once again for being a Bottle Genie customer, you mean more than you will ever know!"

Customers on social media were equally wholesome in their appreciation for the service.

Doorstep Glass Recycling was founded during the pandemic lockdown in Dundee and has since expanded to offer collections in Perthshire, Aberdeenshire, Fife, Stirlingshire, Clackmannanshire, West Lothian, and Glasgow City.
