YOUNG people in the Wee County showed excellent sportsmanship at last week's CPSSA Badminton Quaich finals.

The competition, part of the Clackmannanshire Primary Schools Sports Association (CPSSA) programme, has seen 16 teams from every primary school in the area battle it out for the title during November.

After 30 inter-school matches and more than 150 individual games, six schools qualified for the final on Tuesday, November 29.

The event was hosted at Lornshill Academy, in a partnership with the Sports Development department, and was the culmination of a tremendous effort from more than 120 pupils in P6-7.

Indeed, many practised at extra curricular badminton clubs and during school PE classes with a number of pupils participating in local and regional badminton festivals supported by the council’s Sports and Leisure Team.

This year finalists attended from Abercromby, St Serf's, Menstrie, Tillicoultry, Redwell and Sunnyside primaries with each match comprised of two singles games, two level doubles games and one mixed doubles game.

Ultimately, Redwell PS were crowned champions with a victory over Menstrie PS in the final.

St Serf's meanwhile edged out Tillicoultry PS to claim the bronze medals.

Robbie Stewart, senior manager for sport and leisure, said: “The Clackmannanshire Primary Schools Sports Association deliver an annual programme of sports competitions and sports festival for our young people across Clackmannanshire.

“This inter school event is a great example of how participation in sport can help to build the confidence and self esteem of our young people and encourage life long participation.”

The finalists from Redwell and Menstrie primaries are set to go on to compete in the Regional Primary Quaich competition on Friday, January 20, 2023, against two primary schools from Stirling with the potential to qualify for the national event at Wishaw Sports Centre later in February.
