A KINCARDINE childminding business has raised more than £700 for UNICEF's Ukraine Appeal.

When war broke out in Eastern Europe, the kids at the Little Howff Childcare were confused and worried about themselves, their family and those suffering in Ukraine.

The children put together their favourite recipes into a cookbook and raised £728.

Linda Brown, assistant manager, told the Press: "We were walking back from school and the war had just started in Ukraine.

"We had already covered human rights with the children but they were talking about how worried and frightened they were.

"We were reassuring them that the war was only in Ukraine but they were worried about those children getting hurt, that they didn't have the same rights as they had and they wished they could do something to help."

Originally, the children wanted to bake cakes and sell them to their parents but when one child started to share his favourite recipes, Linda decided it would be a great idea for the children to all share their favourite recipes and make them into a cookbook.

She continued: "Because it's taken such a long time to do, a lot of them had forgotten about it so we had to reiterate that but the older ones were quite excited.

"If we said in monetary terms, how much do you think we raised, they would say £100, so when I told them it was over £700 they were amazed!"

Gordon Brown, Linda's husband and Douglas Wilson, her nephew who works at Highland Titles, generously donated the cost of the printing to ensure the entire proceeds of the book went to the Ukraine Appeal.

Linda added: "A lot of people have been very generous, instead of giving just £6 a book, which is what I charged, they would give £10 and I think that's why we exceeded our target."

The last book was sold on December 18 and the proceeds will now be sent off to help the children in Ukraine.
