THE head of a Clacks bowling club is eager to restart a junior section in an effort to get more children across the Wee County interested in bowls.

James Lindsay is a long-standing member of Alloa Co-Operative Bowling Club and is hoping to work with Clackmannanshire Council to ensure the kids section of the club can be re-established.

The club has been in contact with the council to gain permission for the club before working to set up an induction session.

“We’re aiming to work with the sports development officer at the council and hand out flyers before having our induction.

“Once that’s all done, providing we had interest, I was hoping to set up the junior section for the end of April on a Sunday morning running through to September.

“Initially, we’re looking to work with primary schools and if there is enough interest, we can look to bringing in secondary schools as well.

“There’s competitions for juniors and I’m hoping to link with other clubs in the area to allow them to play each other.”

The club has worked with schools before and held a successful trial period in 2019 teaching primary children how to play bowls.

Due to various staff members leaving the club, the former junior section fell out of favour and was not carried on following the end of the trial.

James is hoping to build on this pilot scheme and open it up to the whole of more schools across Clackmannanshire.

“We did it in 2019,” James added. “We had some success through Sunnyside Primary School.

“We ran a club there for around six weeks and then some of the kids came to the club and played on the actual green.

“We had around eight or nine children during that period so we’re hoping to either match or beat that number.”

James is also working with representatives from various mental health groups and is keen on utilising the benefits of bowls on mental wellbeing.

The club is hoping to host their induction near April but no specific date has been confirmed so far.
