HUNDREDS will descend on Clacks later this year for the return of the Big Golf Day fundraiser.

The 2023 event will take place at Alloa's Braehead Golf Course, with around 200 golfers from across the Wee County and beyond expected to participate.

Organised by James Finnie, the event is held to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK and to encourage men to get themselves tested for the disease.

He said: "I started this at Tulliallan Golf Course three years ago and we raised about £400. The past two years have been at Braehead and during the last event, we raised over £7,000.

"It's the biggest Prostate Cancer Golf Day in the country and I was recently told I am the number one fundraiser for Prostate Scotland."

Prostate cancer is a disease which will affect 1 in 8 men across the UK, with men of colour even more likely to develop the cancer in their lifetimes.

James said the statistics surrounding prostate cancer was a big factor in his decision to start fundraising.

"Prostate cancer will affect 1 in 3 men in Scotland," he added. "It's an astonishing statistic and it's because people are wary about getting checked.

"I've taken it upon myself to encourage them to go get checked by hosting as many events as I can."

Participants pay £35 entry which entitles them to a round of golf, a breakfast roll and a two-course meal once the event has finished.

Organisers are also on the lookout for a little extra financial backing to ensure this year's fundraiser is the biggest to date.

James added: "The thing we're after most this year is a sponsor, we have some small sponsors but we would like a big company to promote the whole thing as well."

After the main event has finished, David Edwards will be performing his internationally acclaimed trick shot show.

Nicola Tallett, director of fundraising & supporter engagement at Prostate Cancer UK, said: "We are so grateful for the dedication of James and so many others across the UK, who help Prostate Cancer UK fund scientific research to stop this disease damaging the lives of men and their loved ones.

"Everyone who supports Prostate Cancer UK has their own story, some heart-breaking and others heart-warming, but all united with a common aim to see a world where men's lives are not limited by prostate cancer.

We thank James for going that extra mile and joining us in our promise and commitment: Men, we are with you."
