A WEE COUNTY couple marked their diamond marriage anniversary surrounded by their family and friends.

Maurice and Maureen Barclay tied the knot in Kincardine on March 16, 1963 and celebrated the 60-year milestone at Inglewood House Hotel and Spa.

A marriage defined by their unwavering devotion to each other and to their family, the couple lived in Sauchie before moving to their current residence in Alloa in 1987.

The Barclays went on to start a big family, having three children in Julie, Maurice and David alongside six grandkids and seven great-grandchildren.

“They’re just both really nice people,” Julie told the Advertiser. “They’re really devoted to their family and to their grandkids.

“They met when my dad worked in the butchers in Alloa, whilst my mum worked in the Co-op.

“They lived in Sauchie for a wee while, then moved to Alloa in the 80s where they live now.”

After getting married, Maurice took a job at the Alloa Asda, where he worked until he turned 81 and retired.

Maureen was a cleaner, based at the old college in Clackmannanshire, now part of Forth Valley College.

Throughout their marriage, the two were said to have been fond of camping holidays and enjoyed jetting off to Eastern Europe, a keen interest of Maurice’s.

Julie explained that her parents were keen travellers as they got older, flying to Germany, Russia, Poland and Bulgaria.

She said: "My mum would spend a lot of time at the local church, she enjoyed going there.

“My dad loved reading, he would head down to the library and pick up a book. When he wants to relax, he enjoys a wee dram of whisky.

“Dad likes to watch football, he doesn’t have a team he supports but he likes to watch it when its on.”

Inglewood House threw the couple a huge party to celebrate the landmark milestone, which was attended by Maureen and Maurice’s family and friends.

The party took place on Saturday, March 18, two days after they hit the 60-year marriage mark.
