RELATIVES of people with dementia are being reminded of the uses of the Herbert Protocol, which can help trace their family member in the case of an emergency.
The Herbert Protocol is an online form wherein family members/carers can fill in a person’s details – including next of kin and a photo – in the event they go missing.
The form also asks people to fill in personal information about the family members, such as anywhere that has meaning to the person – perhaps a childhood home, old school or favourite walk spot.
This is designed to help police officers track missing people by visiting places that the person may visit for comfort.
The form is kept by the family – both physically and electronically – and can be quickly sent to the police if they have to file a missing person report, enabling police officers to act fast.
The Herbert Protocol has been put together in support by Alzheimer Scotland, Health & Social Care Scotland and the Scottish Government.
Forth Valley Police have put out a reminder asking anyone who has family members with dementia to fill out the form.
More info about the Herbert Protocol can be found on scotland.police.uk.
