A GROUP of Clacks-based colleagues have raised more than £4000 to help fight cancer in support of their friend and co-worker.

Colin Roseweir led the cohort of 16 workmates from the O-I Manufacturing glassworks to climb Ben Nevis after their friend Alec McGillivray received a terminal diagnosis.

The group, which ranged in experience, climbed to UK's biggest summit on Wednesday, May 17.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Colin said the hike had been a great success and a lovely way to show support for their colleague.

“All 17 of us successfully made the summit,” Colin added. “It was a mixed age group and all at different fitness levels. For some, it was their first Munro.

“It was good to see some of the old faces from work.

"One guy who retired completed the hike – this showed he was still part of the team.

“It was great to see their happy faces on the summit and we shared a wee dram in toast of Alec."

All proceeds from the charity hike will go to Cancer Research UK and support their fight to eliminate the disease.

Colin was eager to recognise the support he and his group have received since launching the fundraiser.

He continued. “Our target of £3000 has been smashed out the water; we’ve raised £4350 with gift aid.

"It’s a great sum raised for Cancer Research, thank you to everyone who has made a donation or shared the page.

“Thank you to my work O-I Glassworks for providing a medical kit for our hike, a bottle of dram and a generous donation.”

Colin and the group spent the night in Fort William before embarking on their hike the next morning.

Colin took a breakaway group of five along the Càrn Mòr Dearg Arête, a slightly more challenging route to soak in some breath-taking views of the north face.
