DAVID MCKAY said he was looking forward to “getting stuck in” to the first round of competitive matches this season.

The centre-half joined the Wasps when the summer window opened, playing the full 90 minutes in a pre-season friendly defeat against Albion Rovers.

Speaking to Advertiser Sport about signing, McKay said he had adjusted to life at the Recs comfortably and was eager for the season to start.

“I’m happy to have signed,” he said. “I’ve settled in really well so far.

“I knew a few of the boys before coming here and they’ve made me feel really welcome and I’m really enjoying my time here so far.”

McKay was signed following a League One campaign with Queen of the South, which saw the Doonhammers narrowly miss out on playoffs in a fifth-place finish.

Going further back, he is a product of the Raith Rovers youth system, becoming a first team regular in 2017 and was part of the squad that won the league in 2020.

With years of experience in League One, McKay said he hopes to utilise that to help younger players in the squad.

“I’m looking to bring my experience with me”, he added. “I’ve played in League One for a number of years now so it’s all about looking to add to the team.

“I’m aiming to use my experience to help the younger lads – we saw Steven [Buchanan], he was brilliant at getting up and down the pitch.

“It’s about encouraging them to do well and I’ve got big Andy [Graham] next to me to keep me right as well.”

McKay played every minute of a 1-0 home defeat against Albion Rovers following their relegation from League Two into the Lowland League.

The Wasps have faced Cumbernauld Colts, Greenock Morton and Livingston so far and will host Dunfermline and the Celtic B Team to round off their pre-season campaign.

McKay said: “I’m feeling good after the few pre-season games we’ve had so far.

“I’ve not played a full 90 minutes for a number of months but as anyone would say – you’d rather play a game than train.

“We have had about maybe five games now so it’s good to get into the swing of things and do some movements that you can’t replicate in training.”

Alloa face rivals Stirling Albion at the Recs for the first competitive match of the season – with the matchup against the Binos set to be the first game in a 2023/24 League Cup campaign.

The Wasps will also face Ayr, St Johnstone and Stenhousemuir before kicking on with the new League One season.

McKay said Alloa will have their eye on promotion after reaching the playoff semi-finals last season.

"Yeah, absolutely," McKay said. “Hopefully, we can push up towards that top side of the table again.

“We’ve just got to worry about ourselves. We know that there are good teams in this league but it is a tough league.

“As long as we work hard, keep it tight at the back and score a few goals, we should be okay.”

“I look forward to every game and it’ll be good to get into the first proper game of the season.

“We’ve had our pre-season games but the rest of the boys and I are looking forward to getting stuck in and getting into the swing of things in the Cup.”
