MORE than 150 house martins have been rescued and cared for by the SSPCA since mid-June.

The team at the Fishcross National Wildlife Rescue Centre reported that more than 162 house martins had come into the centre this summer.

These birds arrived at the centre after they had either fallen from their nest or their nest had been destroyed.

House martins make their nests out of mud and build them high up in the eaves of buildings so it is hard for them to be returned.

Georgina Cook, assistant manager at the Scottish SPCA National Wildlife Rescue Centre, said: “Each house martin that comes into our care needs to be hand fed every hour from early morning until late evening, and until we can see them begin to feed for themselves.

“Once the house martins are at a good weight, are self-feeding and flying really well, then we will release them at the appropriate time of year.

“We try to mimic conditions when they would naturally fledge in the wild as much as possible.”
