A former soldier has been given a prison sentence after making threats about stabbing, rape and going on the rampage with a machete during a call to the NHS 24 helpline.

Alexander Drummond, 37, of Main Street, Tullibody, appeared at Alloa Sheriff Court by video link from jail.

He admitted that on July 22, at his home, he made a phone call to NHS 24 and shouted, swore, made offensive remarks and threats of violence to a mental health practitioner.

Depute fiscal Rachel Wallace said that during the call Drummond said he was going to stab someone. He named various people he wanted to harm and said he had a machete which he was going to use.

He said he would “go on the rampage before committing suicide”. He also threatened that he would pay money to have someone raped in prison.

He became abusive to the practitioner.

Defence solicitor Charlotte Watt said:  “He’s regretful and wants to make apologies to the court and the call handler. He’s ashamed.”

She said Drummond is a former soldier and has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from his time in the army.

Sheriff Neil Bowie said:  “This would have been extremely alarming for a medical professional operating an NHS helpline and it’s not something they should have to tolerate.”

He told Drummond: “You have a significant record of violent offending and your previous sentence had just expired.”

The sheriff jailed Drummond for eight months.
