A CLACKS MP joined the Wee County Veterans and Supporters Group in selling poppies for Remembrance Day.

John Nicolson, MP for Ochil and South Perthshire, joined the veterans team inside Morrisons in Alloa in handing out the commemorative poppies last Wednesday, November 7.

The veterans stall was manned by Robert, Bernie, Jo and Joe, who shared their experiences of active service with John and any passersby.

The group had also brought along a uniform and other items from the First World War, which were put on display.

Mr Nicolson described his own connection to the Poppy Appeal through his father and grandfather and praised Alloa for their role in remembering them.

He said: “It was lovely seeing how well supported this year’s Poppy Appeal has been in Alloa.

“I felt a real sense of connection when I saw the photograph of the World War One soldier on display.

“My own grandfather fought in the trenches and survived the First World War only to be killed in the Luftwaffe bombing on Clydeside during the Second World War.

“This devastated my family.

“It’s very important that we support veterans and stand up for them. They did exactly what we, as a society, asked of them.

“It’s only right that we respect and honour them.”

The veterans group has spent all week selling poppies across Clackmannanshire to prepare people for Remembrance Sunday.

They are always looking to welcome new members to help with the work they do, with the group meeting regularly in their premises on Sauchie’s Main Street.
