A GROUP of firemen are aiming to become the highest fundraisers in the country as they take on Movember.

The eight man crew, all from Tillicoultry Fire Station, have been growing out their moustaches to raise money for mental health charities covered by Movember.

The crew has seen a meteoric rise in their funds raised, propelling them to the second highest in the fire service chart for Scotland and overall fifth in the UK.

Craig Lapsley, crew commander at Tilly Fire Station, said the team were inspired to do Movember to raise awareness of mental health within the emergency services.

He said: “It was something we’d discussed given the different charities Movember cover, especially the ones focusing on the mental health aspect.

“We feel this is something that is not talked about a lot in emergency services.

“We wanted to try to raise awareness of mental health services, we’ve got people who have personal reasons as well but that’s what we wanted to do.”

Each of the participating fire stations around the country are placed in the national fire service chart, allowing them to compare their progress with other stations in Scotland and the UK.

Tilly Fire Station currently sit at the second highest in Scotland and fifth in the UK, with Craig adding that he wants to raise as much as he can after smashing their initial target of £1000.

He added: “We thought we were going to get £1000 and we’ve smashed that so we thought we’d try get a last push to raise as much as we can.”
