KIDS at a Sauchie nursery have become eco-warriors in their community after taking part in monthly litter picks.
The pupils at Flying Start Nursery have been heading out and picking up the rubbish in and around their nursery.
This is part of an initiative in place from 2019 which has seen the nursery teach the value of caring for the environment to its young learners.
Hannah Mullen, nursery practitioner, said: “We started in 2019 with our Eco-Schools project and from there, we did our own evaluations about what goes on in our community.
“We looked at what we could do to help prevent litter and how we could help with recycling to increase knowledge about what is good with our eco-systems.
“As part of that project, we do at least one litter audit – we take the kids out into the community or on to our own grounds where we feel needs the most support.
“We take our bin bags out, we get our protective clothing on and our kids do a wee clean up, but we also do an audit at the same time to support our kids’ numeracy skills as well.”
While the project was initially started to better educate the kids on the environment and ecosystem, it has since become a staple at the nursery.
The kids have fully jumped on the idea, with Hannah explaining that pupils look forward to the litter audit each month.
“Our kids look forward to it,” Hannah added. “We take them out most days and a lot of them will point at all the litter to show us.
“All of them have been telling their parents so it’s raised a big awareness amongst the children.”
