With the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III has ascended to the throne.

On Friday morning (September 9), Buckingham Palace released a statement, saying: “Following the death of Her Majesty the Queen, it is His Majesty the King’s wish that a period of royal mourning be observed from now until seven days after the Queen’s funeral.

“The date of the funeral will be confirmed in due course.”

After this period, there is likely to be significant changes to the lives of certain members of the royal family, including where they live.

Where does King Charles III live now?

The King’s current residence is Clarence House where he has lived with his wife, Camilla, now Queen Consort, since they married in 2005.

It was previously the home of the late Queen Mother before her death in 2002.

Will the King live at Buckingham Palace?

Despite speculation over the years, it is understood the King will move to Buckingham Palace, with rumours he planned to stay put and make the Queen’s former residence an administerial base museum firmly quashed.

In February this year, a source told the Daily Mail that he was 'firmly of the view that it's the visible symbol of the monarchy in the nation's capital and therefore must be his home'.

'There is no question about it.'

Adding, 'HRH's view is that you need a monarch at monarchy HQ. This has never been in doubt.'

Where does Prince William live?

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge recently moved house from Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace, where they have lived since 2017.

At the end of the summer, they moved the family to Adelaide Cottage, close to Windsor Castle, a much smaller home and, perhaps more surprisingly, with no room for live-in staff for the first time.

The Duke of Cambridge is now set to become the next Prince of Wales and is first in line to the throne, taking on the responsibility, and multimillion-pound income, of the Duchy of Cornwall estates.

When the Queen's father died she and her family moved from Clarence House to Buckingham Palace and if this is the plan now for King Charles, it is possible William will then move into his father’s former home.

Royal residences closed during mourning period

Royal residences – including The Queen’s Gallery and the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace, and The Queen’s Gallery in Edinburgh – will close until after the Queen’s funeral.

Balmoral Castle and Sandringham House, the Queen’s private estates, will also close for this period.

Hillsborough Castle, the monarch’s official residence in Northern Ireland, will also be closed.
