PAISLEY band The Vegan Leather return with latest single Sanctum Sound.

After spending much of the year locked down with the rest of the world, the art-pop outfit made an exhilarating return last month with Gloaming.

The track has also been lauded for its incredible accompanying video – a spooky animated masterpiece by fellow Paisley-based digital artist Bovine - which was also shortlisted for The Weekender's Music Video of the Year award

Sanctum Sound is said to be a product of the strange circumstances facing society right now.  Not only does it mark their first entirely independent production, but it also finds them exploring themes of physical and personal space.

Marie Collins, one of the band's singers and guitarists, said: “We’ve been thinking about ‘space’ a lot during the pandemic.

"In Gloaming, we wrote about a really physical place where you could envision a scene. For Sanctum Sound, we were thinking more about ‘spiritual’ or ‘personal’ spaces.

"Living through a pandemic has shown the importance of being able to explore your imagination as there is a lack of space to move in the physical world just now.

“There’s a lot of religious symbolism in the song too which comes from the word ‘Sanctum’ meaning a kind of sacred place.

"I think a lot of people can relate to that right now in terms of having to stay in your own bubble - both physically and mentally.

"One of the lines ‘No ticks on the clock’ - I think could be translated into how obscure time has become throughout the pandemic, but there’s definitely a deeper spiritual twist within the meaning of the song.

"Everyone will be burying into their own Sanctum for the upcoming weeks ahead and, hopefully, the tune will be able to keep you company.”

Gianluca Bernacchi, the band's other vocalist and guitarist, added: "This song is our first time going fully at it alone, so with this was quite an intimidating challenge.

"I spent a long time chasing a more rigid version of the Tame Impala drum sound. It’s more of a disco/rock vibe that takes inspiration from Pink Floyd and Scissor Sisters."
