SUNSTINGER are preparing to release their first EP, with lead single Shadows unveiled earlier this month.

The Fife four-piece – known for their own brand infectious indie-shoegaze – will unleash the four-track Beyond the Frame in June.

Despite having seven singles to their name already, dating back to 2018, the upcoming release will be the band's first EP release.

It is the logical next step for Sunstinger who have embracing the production side as much as the writing aspects in recent times.

Taylor Wright, the band's singer and guitarist, tells The Weekender: "It feels like it's been a progression leading up to the EP, although we weren't really thinking about the direction we were heading musically.

"Over the past few years, we've learnt more about our instruments and the pedals we use, more about the recording process and I've learnt a bit more about myself in terms of writing.

"We record a lot of songs, so we've picked up a lot of different techniques in the studio.

"During the first rehearsal, Scott showed up with a few cheap guitar pedals in a Tesco bag. We recorded our first single Even When a few months later...We've came along way from then."

The first lockdown period has certainly helped to shape the feeling of the EP, which bears a overriding feeling of helplessness and confinement.

Wright explains: "When it comes to writing the lyrics, I usually just write about what's happening in my life or around me at that time.

"I like to write about the places where we are from, and the people I know from around here.

"I wrote the EP in the first lockdown and we recorded it as soon as we could. I think the EP has a sense of frustration throughout it, like feeling trapped."

The frontman continues: "If people dig what we put out and come along to the shows that's enough for us. We just want to go out and have a good time.

"If people can relate to my lyrics it means a lot to me and it gives me a buzz to keep writing."

With the EP out in June, Sunstinger will be eager to make their return to the stage – with the possibility of a dual-Dunfermline band tour.

He adds: "We love playing live. That's what it's all about for us.

"Our first show back will be a headliner at PJ Molloys.

"There were talks of a small UK tour, pre-covid, with fellow Dunfermline band ForeignFox, so hoping to get that organised as soon as its do-able."
