TAAHLIAH will release her latest single at the end of the month – but it is only just the beginning for the Glasgow artist.

Never Lose lands on April 30 and is sure to surprise those fans who were drawn in by her previous release Brave earlier this year.

The tune, featuring the vocals of Spent, has a decidedly harder edge to it with and gritty tones throughout.

It stands in stark contrast to light floor-filler in Brave, but that – TAAHLIAH tells The Weekender – was the whole idea.

"I think I'm always trying to defy expectations," she says. "Even subconsciously.

"I'm interested in the depths of electronic music, what it can mean and what it can do for people, specifically in terms of communities and bringing people together."

She adds: "All my music comes from a place of personal experience and emotion. I am able understand myself more than anyone so why not make music about that?

"Never Lose came alive when Spent and I first met in London last year; we agreed to work on some music together, and Never Lose was the first thing to come out of that.

"The track is essentially contextualising contemporary trans and non-binary experiences in a tongue-in-cheek way.

"Spent's vocals provide a light-hearted bitchiness, even when the lyrical subject matter gets quite dark – which was deliberate and another way of defying expectation."

Never Lose is the precursor to a follow-up single in May with a full project unveiled on May 28.

And if the contrast between the first two singles is anything to go by, the main release will be difficult to predict.

"I wanted to provide listeners with a spectrum of sound, leading up to the release of the full project," TAAHLIAH adds.

"I'm really desperate for people to hear the work, but there's such a long road of conception to release, especially with the modern day machine that is the music industry.

"I want to do everything correctly as well, making sure the right people are paying attention at the right time. However, I'm just happy for everything to finally be coming out now."

When asked would be a win for the release, she replies: "We all want different things as artists and then there comes the pressure of numbers, and streams and such.

"I'm not interested in all of that, I make my music for my community. If those kind of people can connect with it and enjoy it then that's a win in my eyes."

Never Lose will be released on Friday, April 30.
