GUS HARROWER vows to continue experimenting with his sound as he prepares to unveil his latest track this week.

Known to dive between genres, the artist is keen to continue exploring new territory for the time being.

This Friday he releases The Walls and while there are some similar to his earlier work, it is another new direction for him.

Harrower said: "I feel like there's a lot of pressure placed on artists to find 'a sound'. In many ways I understand this because if an artist is signed to a label, they want to find and establish a fanbase and then maintain them.

"At my stage in my career, I still feel like I can try different things, work with new people and ultimately try and deliver something new every time."

The Walls certainly fits the bill, with the track going through a number of iterations as Harrower push its limits over the last year.

He even recruited talents of TikTok's Karsten Belt, a young saxophonist from the Netherlands, who performs a mighty solo on the track.

Harrower recalls: "I remember when writing it, I was picking chords that made me feel warm and comforted and I used certain inversions to lead on to new places. Someone commented that it had a similar vibe to another track of mine, Blinded, and I think when that was said, I tried to re-create those rich, fluffy tones that I feel that song has."

On the Belt solo, he adds: "There aren't enough sax solos – the 80s stole them all!

"I've been listening to a lot of Bruce Springsteen over the past year, and he uses a saxophone so well. I definitely took inspiration from that, and I think the sound of a ripping sax solo evokes certain feelings that other instruments can't quite nail."

Harrower is looking to put out some more new material this year, with one eye on a possible return to the stage further down line.

He says: "I've got a couple of more singles planned and then a bigger release towards the end of the year. Things are changing in my personal life which will allow me to give my music the attention that I think it's been crying out for the past few years. I can't wait to get writing, recording and releasing more.

"I'll need to see about the gigs though," he adds. "I've still not decided how I feel about performing in the current climate.

"I strongly believe that gigs should be as up communal and intimate as they used to be before the pandemic and at this rate, it doesn't look like things are changing any time soon.

"However, when they do return – we'll be back bigger and better than before. I can guarantee that."

Gus Harrower – The Walls will be available from Friday, June 11.
