ALLOA star Steven Hetherington was the unlikely match winner as his side overcame Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill last Saturday.

The midfielder rarely finds the back of the net but helped himself to a brace, including one direct from a corner, matching his entire tally for the club in 96 previous appearances.

And the fans’ favourite admitted he would love to improve his scoring record – if only to appease his dad.

Hetherington told Advertiser Sport: “Adding more goals is definitely something I can improve on. I get a bit of stick for not scoring enough from my old man. But as long as the ball goes in the back of the net then it doesn’t matter. If it’s me who does it, brilliant.

“It’s the first time I’ve scored directly from a corner since I was about nine years old playing seven-a-side with the goal 10 yards away.

“We worked in training on getting the lads closer to goal and putting the ball on top of the keeper. It’s very rare that type of thing happens but I’ll definitely take it.”

Hetherington admitted that the Wasps suffered a second-half wobble as Rovers threatened to find a route back into the game.

However, the midfield ace reckons it’s just crucial they keep picking up points steadily as they look to seal a playoff place.

He said: “For us the main thing was to get the three points. We have had a lot of games in a short space of time so to get the three points was vital because we’ve got to keep putting points on the board when we’re chasing the playoffs. As it’s turned out it’s a really good result.

“We anticipated they’d come out with a reaction in the second half and to be fair, we never got going. Their goal gave them a lift. Overall, we deserved to win the game but when they brought it back to 2-1, it was a bit shaky.

“We made it hard for ourselves. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when it went to 3-1 because that pretty much killed the game off.”

Alloa were handed an additional boost with playoff rivals Arbroath and East Fife both losing, but Hetherington insisted the squad are only thinking about their own form in the final weeks of the regular season.

He added: “We all saw the results after the game and it’s great that they went our way but you just have to concentrate on yourself in these situations. We are just trying to build a bit of form at the minute because that is so important going into the playoffs if we get there.”
