BT Caledonia League, Division 2 (Midlands)

THE home crowd braved the elements to cheer Hillfoots RFC on at Tilly Park on the final match of the season as the squad chased promotion.

The 1st XV, having prepared for this day all year, arrived determined to take the win over Carnoustie RFC and secure their advance into the BT Caledonia League 1 on Saturday, March 31.

They needed a bonus point to win the league and as the game started, the home side immediately mounted pressure on the visiting defence.

Some good tactical kicking from the Carnoustie fly half acted as brief relief, but it was to no avail as the Hillfoots side quickly went over the line for the first try in the opening exchanges.

The away team was determined to make amends and made some good plays to get into the Foots half.

They were looking to take advantage of a penalty, opting to kick for three points, but the shot missed the target.

Thereafter the home side started to force its own game plan on Carnoustie and began to bring the tries in.

Ending 46-0, there was never any doubt the first half was in the host's favour.

While the opposition never gave up, and started the second half well to exert some authority over the game, it was Hillfoots' day with the home side now starting to run away with it.

It was down to many individual breaks from several backs and the centre, who created numerous tries for the 1st XV, including a perfectly set-up farewell gift to Gareth Parry, who is leaving the club as ho moves south of the border.

Most of the tight play and lineouts were dominated by the home fronts who overpowered the Carnoustie scrum on many occasions.

Finishing the season in style, Foots achieved a 87-0 victory to propel themselves into the next division.

The players enjoyed their moment as the Tilly Park crowd cheered them on and the celebrations continued in the clubhouse thereafter.
