Caledonia Regional Shield, Round One
ALLOA progressed into the second round of the Caledonia Regional Shield on Saturday with a fine away victory in Elgin.
The match was originally scheduled for August 25, but an accident on the A9 meant that the Alloa boys had to abort the journey and replay the match on the next available free weekend.
There were no issues with the road this time and last year’s Shield winners immediately set about defending their title when Rab Truesdale burst over the line after five minutes, but he was adjudged to have knocked on the process.
But the early score was only delayed for a few minutes as Kris Aitken capitalised on some good forward pressure on the home line to score out wide.
Moray rallied from this early setback and some good back play saw there stand off burst through for an equalising score, but Alloa immediately replied with another score of their own when Marc Murray dived over in the corner.
The home side kicked a penalty to reduce the deficit, but further first half tries from Rab Truesdale, Martin McKenzie and David Jess and ensured a comfortable 29-10 lead at the break for the visitors.
The second half was a more even affair with both sides notching three tries apiece with man of the match, Ed Waller scoring twice and Lee Cairney once.
Alloa’s reward for this victory is another trip up north this Saturday as they take on Banff RFC – KO 1.30pm
