Peter Grant has sung the praises of his Alloa Athletic players as he steps up plans for football's return.

The Wasps boss was delighted to secure the vast majority of last season's Championship surviving squad on deals earlier this month as he fulfilled his promise to offer them all extended terms.

The only first team regulars not so put pen to paper on new contracts the retired Iain Flannigan, Kevin O'Hara, who is widely expected to return to full-time football, with the likes of Jon Robertson and Liam Buchanan all pledging their future to the Wee County outfit.

Youngsters Chris Henry and Paul Gillespie have also left the club.

Grant told Advertiser Sport: "I am delighted to get this all done so early because the players have all down so well and earned the respect of everyone.

"I've said before there were only three or four occasions last season where they let themselves down or didn't get to the levels we aim for as a team.

"They all played their part in that and guys like Scott Taggart, who had to play in a number of positions and cover for Andy Graham, were fantastic.

"Then there were others who don't get the recognition they deserve like young Blair Malcolm and Adam Brown, who never let us down.

"I know people who are talking about our players and who might be interested in them and you've got to respect them for committing to the club."

Grant says he has begun discussions with chairman Mike Mulraney about adding to his squad, which is even smaller than last year following the departure of Flannigan and co. and loan starts such as Lee Connelly.

While the Wasps, like every club, will be operating under the pressures brought on by a lack of income due to Covid-19, the former Norwich City boss says he has been reassured money is there to add to his team if the right player can be found.

He added: "The players deserve everything for all of their efforts during last season and for stepping up when we asked them."
