STEVEN GERRARD has urged Ryan Kent to forget about an England call up and focus on continuing his stunning start to the season for Rangers. 

Ibrox assistant manager Gary McAllister raised the possibility of Kent pushing for a place in the Three Lions squad last month. 

Kent has enjoyed a terrific run of form for the Gers and will be a key part of Gerrard’s squad once again this term after Leeds United failed to land him in a £10million move in the summer. 

And Gerrard insists maintaining his levels at Ibrox has to be the priority for Kent rather than dreaming of joining the likes of Raheen Sterling and Jadon Sancho in Gareth Southgate’s ranks. 

Gerrard said:  “I don’t know what Gareth is looking for, but I do know he has a luxury of wide men available.

“He has wide men who are producing the goods consistently in the English Premier League and the Bundesliga.

“If you look at the England team and squad at the moment, you would actually say that’s the strongest position.

“You’re talking about players worth over £100m in there, so it’s certainly a huge challenge, and not just for Ryan but for any young English winger who has ambitions of representing England.

“But that’s not important to me at the moment — and I don’t know how important it is to Ryan.

“The priority has to be here at Rangers.

“This should be the bread and butter of his focus and he has started the season in a fantastic place. His form has been really good.

“He’s playing a lot of games at the moment and I need to try and look after him, to make sure we can keep him in this vein of form. We’re delighted with him here and he’s happy and settled.

“We’re away from the noise that was around him a few weeks back and we’re looking forward to working with him here for a long time.”
