SUPER ALFREDO

It would perhaps be pushing it to describe Alfredo Morelos, a striker who has neither won a major trophy nor netted against Celtic in his three-and-a-half years at Ibrox, as a Rangers legend.

But the Colombian certainly wrote his name into the Glasgow club’s record books forever last night when he got on the end of a Borna Barisic cross and bulletted a header into the net.

It was his 21st goal in continental competition and meant he equalled the long-standing European goalscoring record held by the watching Ally McCoist. You wouldn’t bet against him breaking it in the months ahead.

RANGERS MISSED THEIR 12TH MAN

The form shown by Steven Gerrard’s side both home and away in the Premiership and Europa League in the 2020/21 campaign underlines they have adapted to playing their games inside empty stadiums due to Covid-19 well.

Yet, there is also no doubt that Gerrard’s team are at a disadvantage, in European games especially, at Ibrox without 45,000 of their fans roaring them on.

The Govan ground is an intimidating arena for foreign visitors when it is packed. Would Lech Poznan have performed so calmly and competently if there had been a full house in attendance?

KEMAR ROOFE STILL NEEDS GAME TIME

The English forward scored what could well prove to be the goal of the Europa League this season when he netted from inside his own half against Standard Liege in Belgium last week.

He was, after getting another outing against Livingston on Saturday, preferred to Alfredo Morelos up front last night as a result.

But the £4.5m struggled to justify his selection ahead of a man who broke a UEFA club competition record by scoring 14 times before Christmas last season.

He failed to get on the end of an outstanding Borna Barisic cross in the first-half, sliced an overhead kick wide when he should have left it for Ryan Kent and then gave the ball away in the middle of the park.

The former Leeds United man, who was replaced by Morelos after an hour, has spent over a month out and needs matches to improve his sharpness.
