ALLOA captain Andy Graham was delighted to see the team picking up three points and said the result on Saturday was the reason players play football.

Despite a dreadful surface, Alloa were able to grind out a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Kevin Cawley and Adam King.

Speaking exclusively to Advertiser Sport, Graham said: “[I’m] absolutely delighted, that’s why you play football.

“We’ve not had enough of them this year and when you come to a place like this – listen, the conditions were perfect in terms of the weather but the pitch was a struggle to play on at times – so, to come and get three points, you’re delighted.

“At the same time it’s the same for both teams, but what I was delighted with was we adapted to the conditions and we played the conditions well and won the game because of that.”

The pitch was not the finest the Wasps will ever play on but Graham was pleased to see the team still put in a good performance and take three points.

He continued: “I’m not going to stand here and moan because of the pitch. The conditions played their part in the winner although don’t take anything away from Kingy’s finish because it was unbelievable to score from that angle.

“Also I felt we created enough chances in the second half to merit the win as well and that’s the most important thing.”

Despite a bit of fortune in the second goal, Graham believed it was coming thanks to Alloa’s relentlessness.

He said: “It felt like that on the pitch, we were creating chances [and] that’s great because we’re creating a lot and we’re not giving away any until the last couple of minutes but we know they’re going to be putting pressure on us.

“What I was delighted with was it wasn’t just one or two players, Churchy [Daniel Church] cleared one off the line, Vinnie [Mark Durnan] had a great clearance, Cammy O’Donnell came on and I’m always telling him to take charge of situations – well, he didn’t half do that with a great header and then a block – and that’s the most important thing, it’s a team effort.”

Asked about the club’s aspirations for the rest of the season, Graham was diplomatic in his answer.

He continued: “The target is to go out and win three points every Saturday and take it from there. Every week [we try] to get three points and build on that and see where that takes us, I don’t see the point in doing big targets, just try and win every game we go into and take it from there.”

Graham explained the players found out about Barry Ferguson’s resignation through social media, much like the fans.

“Similar to [everyone else], it came out on Twitter and that’s how we found out,” he continued. “I’ve said to the players all week, that’s in the past now.

“Football moves on quick and we’ve just got to salvage what has been a poor season for us as a group of players.

“It’s not just the management at fault because we’ve been the ones going out on a Saturday and not performing at the level we should be, and I was delighted to see that on Saturday, that was the most important thing.”
