ALLAN SALVONA says Alloa Athletic Women performed well last week in a game he described as their toughest test so far.

The Wasps welcomed McDermid Ladies to Lornshill Academy last Thursday, June 9 and were defeated 2-0 by a late Demi Gear double.

McDermid now sit top of the league with six wins out of eight games but for Salvona, the performance was yet another clear indicator of the improvements his team are making.

He told Advertiser Sport: "I think out of all the teams we've come up against McDermid were the toughest test so far. Technically, they have some very good players.

"After the first 15-20 minutes things settled down and we had a bit more confidence but credit to McDermid Ladies, they were a very good outfit.

"You can tell a lot of the girls have been playing for a long team and they're where they are in the league based on merit.

"Thursday was one of the toughest tests that the girls have faced so far."

Despite the defeat, Salvona praised his team – and his defence in particular – for giving their all once again.

He continued: "They certainly had more possession but we restricted their chances. I thought the defence was excellent and the midfield, from a defensive perspective, were very good as well acting as that protection for the back four.

"Since the East Fife game we've had something to build on and there's progression definitely happening. The girls are becoming familiar with the formation and the style we're trying to implement.

"Every girl gave 100 per cent and that's what we need, there was no passengers and they're now starting to do that week in, week out which is good."
