CONOR SAMMON’S excellent start to the season continued on Saturday and he praised his team for a super result.

The striker has almost matched his tally for the whole of last season barely two months into the current campaign.

Speaking exclusively to Advertiser Sport, he said: “We knew it was a big game for us after the last few results that we’ve had. We’ve been frustrated so it was great to start the game so well and go in front and I thought we dominated the game from start to finish.

“I’m just delighted for the lads. We put a lot into the game and we get the three points, we get a clean sheet, we get lots of goals so it’s a super result and one that we’re looking to build on.

“The goals are coming from everywhere and we know we have that ability in the team with the quality that we’ve got. There’s good deliveries going in today, set-pieces were brilliant.

"We have that real physicality about us but we need to utilize it a bit more by putting in better quality [crosses] and I thought today was a prime example of that.

"When we put the balls into those areas and give the big lads a chance to really go and attack we can cause massive problems for teams so that was really pleasing.

“I’m just delighted for some of the lads. I thought Cammy [O’Donnell] was outstanding. You can see the quality that he’s got so it was great to see him bring that and hopefully he can build on that.”

Sammon has had a long career in the game but Luke Rankin’s story is just beginning and he scored his first goal on Saturday.

“It’s brilliant and on the back of scoring a hat-trick [on Friday night] for the 20s,” Sammon continued. “For a young guy like that it’s brilliant to have in the squad with that hunger to go and get goals. Hopefully, it’s the first of many for him and another bonus from today.”

Next up for the Wasps is Clyde and Sammon says the team need to keep working hard to give themselves the best opportunity to win.

He continued: “I have been in the game long enough to know you just go week by week. We’re delighted with the result today and we’ll enjoy it and then come Tuesday you look to your next game which is Clyde. You really are only as good as your last game.

“We need to keep fighting, keep working and keep showing that quality in every game. We need to focus on ourselves and if we can bring that quality and work ethic to the table I’m sure we’ll have a great opportunity come Saturday.”

Sammon’s loving his football at the moment and is hoping to add plenty more goals to his tally.

He said: “Strikers feed off goals, we feed off chances. Sometimes you come off the pitch and you’re frustrated you’ve not even had a real opportunity so it’s nice when you’re getting on the end of things and they’re going in.

“The confidence definitely does come and you feel whenever the ball comes into the box you’re going to get on the end of it and get opportunities.

"With the quality we’ve got in the team, as a striker it’s very enjoyable and I’m just looking to score as many as I can and keep enjoying the football that we’re playing.”
