ALLOA Athletic Women’s team put on a fine display on Sunday, producing a 1-1 result against league contenders Buchan United Women’s in the final game of the season.

The team was heavily hit with injuries and only fielded 11 players but that did not stop them coming out strongly and taking the game to the more experienced side.

Wasps captain Abbie Trotter was pleased with the result and hailed her side for giving Buchan a game despite their setbacks.

She said: “Considering we had a squad of twelve today, a draw is a good result. The last time we went up to face them, we lost 3-1 so it’s a definite improvement on that.

“Putting it altogether, it’s a good result. On another day, with a few extra bodies fully fit, we’d be expecting more from that one.”

The Wasps are awaiting confirmation on if their last fixture against McDermid Ladies which has been mired in rescheduling throughout the year.

If that game does not go ahead, Alloa Athletic finish their first season in sixth place, with Abbie praising the team for an encouraging maiden tournament.

“It’s reasonably positive. We want to be pushing a lot higher in the table but it’s all about context – first year as a team, we’ve come together from scratch so in terms of squad size it’s been up and down.

“The first half of the season is not great. We’ll all hold our hands up and say we’ve not been good enough but if you look at the second half, we have pushed on.

“We’ve picked up points against teams that were beating us in the first half of the season and I think everyone’s feeling pretty positive about going into next season.”

The women’s North East Championship will recommence in March.
