A WEE COUNTY volleyball team has become Third Division champions for a second time after they prevailed at the Scottish Open Volleyball Tournament.

Clackmannanshire Volleyball Club, known as the Clackers, triumphed over the city of Dundee in the final during the two-day event, held over the weekend.

The Clackers competed against over a thousand players in teams from USA, Czech Republic, Canada, Poland, Australia, Belgium and the Faroe Islands.

Niall Hammond, club secretary for the Clackers, said: “It is the second time we have been league champions and we are absolutely thrilled to do it again.

“We are absolutely delighted. There are teams from all over the UK and beyond so it’s not just local teams you’re playing against.

“You’re playing against teams from all over the world. It’s nice to win but there’s also a great sense of banter and comradery between volleyball teams.

“It’s not just a case about winning, it’s nice to go out and meet people as well.”

The Clackers started around 15 years ago and has attracted a wide range of players from all round the world including Poland, Spain, Germany and Italy, with some originating in Scotland.

They won the Third Division title in 2019 but had to put practice on hold when Covid hit and so decided to re-enter the pyramid in division three again.

The Scottish Open Volleyball Tournament is the biggest volleyball competition in Great Britain, played on 36 outdoor courts on the North Inch in Perth.

The Clackers will now be participating in the Second Division, and hope to expand their numbers before the league starts again.

Niall added: “We always welcome new male and female players from the county and beyond to come and join us on a Monday night at Alva Academy.

“We need to build on our success for the future!”
