MOLLY WILLIAMS has praised Alloa Athletic for digging deep to win their last few games of the season, earning a fourth-place finish.

Alloa beat West Park 2-0 to secure a place in the top four, a big achievement in a season full of ups and downs.

Williams told Advertiser Sport the team were delighted to finish where they did, though they all harboured higher hopes at the start of the year.

"We're all really happy," she said. "At the start of the season, we probably wouldn't have been happy finishing fourth, we would've wanted to finish in the top three.

"But then, in the middle of the season, Allan left and we had so much going on off the pitch that nothing really worked on the pitch.

"We had a few rubbish results, to say the least, in the middle, but we managed to bring it back a bit towards the end.

"So, to get fourth place, it was good for us to finish there."

Second half goals from Megan Armstrong and Amy Cully gave Alloa the three points, with the Wasps finishing on 16 points overall.

Williams went on to say the team changed their shape to take advantage of the wide pitch at The Recs, allowing the team's wingers to put the ball into dangerous areas

She said: "We started with a 4-5-1 – The Recs is really wide and we hope to use that to our advantage since West Park hadn't played us at home before.

"We had talked a lot in training about using the wingers to cross the ball in towards Amy, who was on top.

"The first half, we had so many chances – a lot of them coming from Alex Gray who was out on the right.

"When she was beating her player, we got the midfield to flood the box – getting Abbie [Trotter], Heather [Bundy] and Olivia [Young] into the box.

"We were unlucky at times – we hit the crossbar, it went just wide at times. We were struggling in the first half to find the net but the majority of play was in their half."

The Wasps were led on Sunday, who stepped in to take charge in the dugout whilst the team are in between managers.

Interim manager Sean Black left the club earlier this month and incoming manager Charles Dignan will take over fully from the start of pre-season.

Looking ahead, Williams explained the team were feeling positive about the new manager coming in and starting a new season.

"Everyone's really looking forward to it," Williams added. "It looks good, we'll be looking to strengthen the team over the break.

"With Dignan coming in, he looks like he's looking to drive the team a bit and give us the chance we deserve."

"He's been at East Fife and he's had experience in the women's game which will make a massive difference."
