LUKE DONNELLY said Alloa can take “plenty of positives” from their 2-1 loss to Hamilton, marking a particularly solid second half performance.

The striker came off the bench to score Alloa’s equaliser against Accies on Saturday during a dominant second 45 from the Wasps.

Alloa were denied a share of the points in the 93rd minute of the match, as Joe McGlynn slipped one past Tochukwu Ogayi as the match came to a close.

Despite the result, Donnelly praised Alloa for a markedly strong performance against a full-time team, one who will certainly be up near the top of the league.

“I thought we were unlucky in the end,” Donnelly said. “From our point of view, it was a poor goal to lose last minute, we should have defended the cross better, shouldn’t have let it come in.

“Overall, from a performance level, we were really good and we can take plenty of positives from that. Ultimately, though, the result is far from ideal.”

Donnelly came off the bench to replace Kevin Cawley shortly after the hour mark, making an impact just five minutes later as he found his way on to the scoresheet.

Cammy O’Donnell’s free kick smashed off the crossbar and fell towards David Devine, who headed it down towards Donnelly, allowing him to dink it past Ryan Fulton.

This was Donnelly’s first goal this season, after struggling with injuries and finding a run of games. He told Advertiser Sport he is putting full effort into returning to full fitness and aims for a good run of games to get back into the swing of things.

Donnelly added: “It’s not been ideal with no pre-season but I’ve been working hard in training to try and get back fit.

“Hopefully now I can stay fit and get a good run of games on full fitness. It’s always good to get off the mark for the season.

“I’ve only played a few games so far but hopefully I can kick on from here and get a few more.”
