ALLOA will have another rearranged fixture to look forward to this year as their match against Kelty Hearts was postponed due to the weather.

The Wasps were set to travel to New Central Park on Saturday, but the game was called off after a layer of snow covered the ground during the early morning.

This is the second fixture to be rearranged for the Wasps, with the home tie against Annan Athletic also being rescheduled due to weather conditions.

While it remains to be seen when the Kelty game will go ahead, Advertiser Sport caught up with Andy Graham to look back on the season so far.

Alloa sit in seventh place in the table on 22 points, just three behind Montrose who sit in the playoff fourth position, but the Wasps have a game in hand over the Mo.

Falkirk, Hamilton and Cove sit comfortably ahead at the top of the league, but below them it is still very much wide open, with just six points separating fourth from eighth place.

“It’s a position we want to improve on,” Graham said. “The league is so tight if you take away the top two teams, the middle of the table is so congested at the moment.

“If you win two games, you’re in the fourth spot that everyone is going to be vying for so it’s going to be really competitive.

“There isn’t a lot between any of the teams so it’s really down to us to try and prove to be as consistent as we have been over the last few weeks.

“If we continue that over the next 19 games or so, we’ll hopefully be in that fourth spot that we’re aiming for.”

Since taking over the team in November, Alloa have clocked in some impressive performances against teams higher than them.

Despite a 3-0 defeat to Edinburgh City, the Wasps bounced back with a 2-1 win over Dunbar in the Scottish Cup before drawing 0-0 with Hamilton and scoring a last-minute winner to defeat Cove Rangers.

A two-minute spell of madness meant the points were shared against Montrose, but the gaffer remained upbeat with what he saw.

A highlight of Graham’s tenure so far has been the fluidity of the team, with players dropping back to cover each other and forwards changing positions without breaking formation.

This movement up top has allowed for Alloa to be more unpredictable in their attack, which the gaffer says is exactly what he wants.

“I don’t buy into this bit about managers having to have philosophies,” he added. “The players have got to follow the instructions as they’re the ones that go and carry it out on the football pitch.

“I say this all the time but managers don’t win football games, players win football games. That’s down to them covering each other.

“If somebody does make a run forward – Cammy O’Donnell found himself one on one with the Montrose goalkeeper for example, but if you watch it back, Stevie [Hetherington] had already moved over to cover that position.

“I encourage that as, certainly when I was a player as a defender, I always found it difficult if you’re up against teams with good movement in forward areas.

“Over the last few games, they’ve done that and caused teams problems and I don’t think any of the teams we’ve played against could say they’ve had an easy time of it and that’s exactly what we want.”

Next up for Alloa is a visit from Edinburgh City, who sit bottom of the table on nine points.

Edinburgh have proven themselves to be a bit of a bogey team this season for Alloa, drawing 1-1 at the Recs in September before the 3-0 defeat away to Meadowbank in November.

Since then, Edinburgh have gone through financial troubles, with several players leaving the club over internal disputes.

Despite this, Graham insists he will be expecting a difficult game on Saturday, one he thinks his players will be a match for.

“Some of Edinburgh’s games,” Graham continued. “They’ve actually been quite unlucky. Up at Cove, it was never a 7-2 game.

“It was only when the sending off happened and they tired that they conceded a flurry of late goals but they missed a penalty at 2-1 to go 2-2.

“They’ve still got a core of experienced players there and they’re now going to be aligned with a group of players who have been given an opportunity who may not have had that before so they’re going to be bursting a gut.

“It’s really important that we go into this game on Saturday knowing just how difficult it’s going to be and how much we’re going to have to be at in matching work rate and effort if we want to win the game.

“I’ve watched their games and Michael McIndoe is doing a really good job in difficult circumstances.

“He’s got players giving it their all and if that’s what you’re getting from them, we need to match them and shine through.”

Alloa will host Edinburgh City at the Recs this Saturday at 3pm.
