ALLOA ATHLETIC WOMEN’S progress in the SWFL Plate was cut short on Sunday as they lost 5-1 to Musselburgh Windsor.

The Wasps hosted the East Lothian side for their first competitive game of the new year, and also their first under new manager Allan Milne.

Unfortunately, they did not achieve the result they wanted, with Amy Cully scoring a consolation goal for Alloa.

Speaking to Advertiser Sport, Milne reflected on all the change at the club in recent times, insisting it will take time for that to translate onto the pitch.

“Not as well as we would’ve hoped for,” Milne said. “You want to go in and you want to win your first game but these things happen.

“Ideally, we would’ve liked to have walked away with that game on a win and with everyone happy but there’s been a lot of changes in a short period of time.

“It’s just about working with them and getting our ideas across to them and the belief in them that they can take forward into the league with them in two weeks time.

“It’s not the result we wanted but as a coaching team, maybe we’ve given them too much information in a short period of time that maybe their heads were a wee bit all over the place?

“It’s a case of going back to the drawing board and seeing what we could do.”

Despite the heavy loss, Milne reported plenty of positives from his maiden game in the dugout.

In particular, he praised the women’s resilience and belief despite the scoreline, never looking as if they conceded their chance of getting back into the game.

On the other end, he added that he still needed to add to the squad to cover for injuries and suspensions that were going to occur over the season.

“There were still a lot of positives to take,” Milne added. “Especially in the second half, I asked them to put a bit more belief in themselves.

“To see the character in them in certain moments of the second half was pleasing and it showed me they can come back from those points where the game isn’t going great.

“To go on and score as well shows me that they still have goals in them as well, it’s just about over the new couple weeks trying not to flood them with new information.

“All in all, we need to put a bit more depth to the squad and add a few more players in so that we still have a strong enough squad.

“We definitely need to improve in growing the squad and adding a bit more cover and depth to the squad where possible.”
