TYRECE MCDONNELL got his Alloa career off to a dream start as he provided the assist for a last minute equaliser against Montrose.

The 18-year-old arrived at the Recs on loan from Championship side Queen’s Park, the first loanee of this season for Alloa.

McDonnell signed for the club on Tuesday, September 24, making his first appearance during a friendly against Linlithgow Rose.

The attacker scored the only goal against the Rose and then featured for 15 minutes against Montrose, teeing up Luke Rankin for Alloa’s late equaliser.

Speaking to Advertiser Sport, McDonnell explained why he signed for Alloa and reflected on a strong first week as a Wasp.

“I wanted to get some experience,” McDonnell said. “It’s a different level and hopefully I’d get more game time.

“The boys have been brilliant with me and I thought signing here would be good for me and my development.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how I get on and [this week has] been a good confidence booster.

“I showed what I can do today, helped the team get a draw and I thought we did brilliantly.”

McDonnell had made four appearances for Queen’s Park this season before being loaned to Alloa.

He scored Queen’s Park’s fourth goal during a 6-4 thriller against Scottish champions Celtic during a pre-season friendly, before coming off the bench twice in the League Cup against Elgin and Kelty Hearts.

His last appearance for the Spiders came against Edinburgh City in the SPFL Trust Trophy, with the youngster enjoying the level he was playing at in these games.

“I thought it was very good for me,” McDonnell went on. “It was a high tempo and I was able to learn a lot from them.

“Hopefully I can bring that here and show what I can do. I’d say I’m a creative player, skilful, entertaining – I like to get the ball and try and score, a naturally attacking player.”

McDonnell played closer to the left against Montrose, but is capable of playing in behind the striker as well.

A promising debut will stand him in good stead going forward for the rest of the season under Andy Graham.

“Alloa are a good football team,” McDonnell added. “They pass the ball about well and they’re doing well just now.

“I thought this would be a good move for me to get my experience up and play with Alloa.”
