A WEE COUNTY karate champion is toying with the idea that he could travel to Tokyo in 2020 when the sport will finally be included in the Olympics.

Japan Karate Shoto (JKS) world champion in the 18-21 year category Cameron Scobie, 20, will carry on training to try and stay in the best form, hoping he may have a chance to represent Team GB in four years.

The young full-time karate instructor has been showing a lot of promise recently. Following his success at the world championships last month, he travelled to Copenhagen two weeks ago and won the Senior Kumite in the Shobu Ippon Danish Open without dropping a single point in any of his rounds.

He told Advertiser Sport: “I felt really, really good. It’s always good to go somewhere and pick up the first; I’m delighted with the result.”

At the same competition, his younger cousin and student Sam, 14, also performed superbly, getting the bronze medal in the 14-16 age group with the Scottish team and, perhaps more importantly, gaining the praise of sensei.

Cameron is now looking forwards to the JKS Scotland 2016 national championships at the end of the month and hopes he will be in the team for the English championship in November.

He said: “The national championships is one of the big [events] in the calendar that I would like to do well in. I’ve had a couple of good performances in the past couple of months, the recent one in Copenhagen, so hopefully I’ll come back and do well at the end of this month.”

At the end of the summer, the International Olympic Committee announced that, among four other sports, karate will feature in the Tokyo 2020 schedule.

It is understood the campaign to include the sport has been ongoing since the 70s. Judo, a fellow Japanese martial art, was first included in 1964 when Tokyo last hosted the world’s largest sporting event.

Cameron said: “Obviously, with karate being in the Olympics, now in 2020 – we’ll see how it goes with that, but I’m not too sure. I’m just going to keep on training hard and see what happens.

“I’m just enjoying my karate the now, getting as much experience as I can.”

Cameron and his elder brother Lewis started training at a young age thanks to mother Jacquie, who took them training to toughen up a bit. Since then, the whole family is just loving the sport.

Now, the two brothers are both training the next generation with Active Schools – Cameron also runs evening classes in Dollar twice a week.
